When you are designing a system, you will have seals to choose from that are made out of various types. The best seal will be based on the conditions that your system will be placed under. Two of the most common types of seals are bronze and aluminum seals and each has its own benefits.
What Is Bronze?
Bronze is essentially copper that has had other alloys added to make it stronger, most frequently tin. The alloys make the material much stronger, which can make it a great seal for applications that are placed under a great deal of pressure and where aluminum seals are more likely to fail.
How Bronze Is Enhanced with Additives
Phosphor bronze is so durable that it will often outlast the system it protects. Therefore, it is best for a system where the seal must never fail and cannot be easily replaced. When copper does not have the right additives, it does not have a sufficient amount of springiness and cannot handle the high temperatures that it would experience while being used as a conductor. When phosphorous is added to copper to create phosphor bronze, the copper does not lose all of its conductivity, but is also less likely to fail. Still, the more phosphorous added, the more conductivity is reduced. One way to compromise between heat resistance and conductivity is to add tin. The tin should be kept below 16 percent.
Melting Points for Bronze vs Aluminum
Bronze has a higher melting point than aluminum, so if the system can become very hot, bronze is less likely to fail than aluminum. Still, both are resistant to somewhat high temperatures.
One of the advantages of aluminum is that it is less expensive than bronze. The tin added to copper increases its value and copper is very valuable to begin with. But the added benefits make it worthwhile.
One characteristic both aluminum and bronze have is that they are both very resistant to corrosion. Aluminum forms aluminum oxide, which creates a protective coating that stops the rest of the aluminum seal from corroding. Both aluminum and bronze are also very easy to machine, which allows the seal to be formed into a shape that is best-suited for your application. Both bronze and aluminum are also conductive, so if you are concerned with the seal disrupting an electrical charge passing through the system, a bronze seal will not disrupt this.
