Satisfying a Sweet Tooth
About Me
Satisfying a Sweet Tooth

Ever since she was a young girl, my sister has been interested in agriculture. After graduating with a degree in agriculture education, she accepted a teaching position at a local high school. For the past three years, she has been amazing her students with her knowledge about subjects such as raising beef cattle, growing flowers, and canning fruit preserves. Since she has a sweet tooth, canning fruit preserves is one of my sister’s favorite pastimes. If she ever has the time, she may even launch her own home based business canning fruit preserves to sell to customers. If you’re considering canning jams, jellies, and other sweet goods to sell to customers, you will need to invest in some state-of-the-art industrial equipment. On this blog, you will discover the types of industrial equipment that are necessary to start a canning business.

How To Protect Landscaping When Having A Well Drilled

Malou Leffers

Nearly every municipality has regulations of some type that control where a well is allowed. They may take into consideration property lines, septic tanks and leech fields and the required distance that must be maintained between private wells and their own water and sewer lines. All of these restrictions can severely narrow where the well can go. As frustrating as these laws may be, there is no reason to give up home. With the proper planning there are ways to reduce the impact the drilling process will have on the landscape.

Discuss Available Options With the Company

Well drilling is a muddy, messy business, but many companies are creating innovative ways to control that mess during the drilling process. A couple of the ways this can be done is by installing a silt-fence or placing sand bags around the area to control run-off. Some companies install individual devices of their own design that help to keep the mess corralled. Find out if the drilling company will be using these methods before accepting their services. Also ask if the dirt and rocks removed from the ground will be hauled away as they are removed from the ground. This debris may be too heavy to remove with basic equipment and paying to have it hauled away by someone else could be expensive.

Prepare and Protect the Yard

Some homes may have a suitable driveway for parking the drilling equipment, but more often the lawn is the only place where the vehicles can go. This is going to cause some damage, even if the homeowner waits until mid-summer when the ground is firm. To minimize the damage, remove and transplant any shrubs or gardens that are in the pathway or close enough to be affected. Add into the budget the cost to level and re-seed the grooves left by tires. Many professional drilling companies use ground-protection mats when driving on lawns that reduce the wear and grooves the trucks and other equipment leaves behind.  Homeowners can request this type of protection when scheduling the service, but should not expect that these mats, or the less expensive plywood versions, will eliminate the chance of all damage.

Discuss Potential Municipal Waivers

Despite regulations, some municipalities will allow homeowners to receive a waiver letting them install the well where they would like. Generally this type of waiver will only be given if there is a genuine need for it, not just because it is what the homeowners prefer. If this option is allowed, the homeowner should be prepared for additional expenses. Waivers often require wells be built with thicker walls or other features to protect other utilities or neighboring property.

Discussing this issue with contractors before a quote is accepted will make it clear the level of protection each company is willing to provide. Reputable well-drilling companies like Henderson Well & Pump Co. understand that their clients want to protect their property. Most will do what they can to minimize damage throughout the process. By understanding exactly where they will be drilling and the path they need to take to get there, it can be easier to plan ahead and make the project easier for everyone.
